Rainforest Action Network (RAN) is a long running, grass roots organization dedicated to protecting rainforests and the people that live in and around those forests. Chris Noth (Sex in the City, Law & Order) recently lent his star power to RAN by hosting a party for close friends and RAN supporters at The Plumm Nightclub in New York City, securing $48,000 in donations for RAN. A big supporter of RAN, this is his second annual RAN benefit and celeb friends, Kristen Davis, Jimmy Webb and Paul Blackthorne along with Law & Order friends, Alicia Witt, Richard Belzer and Dann Florek mingled with guests and helped build awareness on RAN’s many environmental campaigns. Square One Organic Vodka provided Rainforest Green-tea-ni cocktails, earning a hug from Noth. Okay, so our bottle got the hug, but that hug reached us all the way to California! Thanks to everyone who supported our friends at RAN and their efforts to reduce US reliance on oil and coal and their work to protect endangered forests and indigenous rights.

Anyone in the world of natural products views each March a their trip to Mecca aka Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, CA, to see old friends from their “tribe” and learn what’s new in food, beverage, personal care, supplements and remedies, and eco products, including clothing and cleaning products. Seminars on socially responsible marketing, introducing products to the United States, organic farming practices and the latest ingredients add to the intellectual element, while luncheons, benefits, parties and dances bring the tribe together for fun and frolic after long days on the trade show floor. While some of the hippie founders of the early companies have turned into corporate leaders who are now the sage pillars of the industry, there is still a sense of excitement and entrepreneurial spirit as new ideas become a reality at Expo.

Having attended many Expos over the past 15 years, I am still overwhelmed by the scale of the event and number of newcomers each year. One highlight of the event is the OFRF Luncheon, a benefit for the Organic Farming Research Foundation (www.ofrf.org), a leading organization in the research of organic farming practices and proponent of nationally standardized organic regulations and labeling. This year, Bob Scowcroft, Executive Director, addressed the crowd, and shared the evolution of his field, sighting that organic farming no longer has to justify itself. It has proven its sustainability as an effective farming practice and no longer needs to be compared to conventional farming. Colleges such as Washington State University even offer majors in organic agriculture now. While organics have arrived, Scowcroft encouraged all to support and maintain the authenticity of organics, with the standards and quality behind the term. Without the credibility, the term has the risk or becoming diluted as did the term ‘natural.’

The overall concept of sustainability seems to be today’s catch phrase as was evident in the marketing materials generated by exhibitors. Organics are still very hot, while the push to support local growers and companies was also strong. Carbon neutrality also had a bit of a buzz going.

As for trends in products and flavors, the high-antioxidant fruits and juices, teas and coffees were center stage. Açai, blueberry and pomegranate, juices, as well as green teas, white teas and yerba maté seemed to be the rage. There was great synergy as many of the companies have teamed up to share ingredients for their products. For example, Sambazon’s açai has been integrated into Steaz new energy drink, Steaz Energy. This was an example also of the emergence of the ‘no bull’ organic energy drinks.

Cocktail hours were rampant in the later hours of the show, as the industry has embraced the “healthy” beverage trends above as their favorite organic cocktail mixers. Square One Organic Vodka was proud to be the organic vodka of choice for Sambazon (www.sambazon.com), Steaz (www.steaz.com), Apple & Eve (www.appleandeve.com), and Numi Teas (www.worldpantry.com) for the happy hours, Brasilian Carnival and after parties.

With the hosting of an Organic Beer and Wine festival, as well as tastings on the floor, the organic beer and wine categories seem to be growing. As a complement to the wines, there were a number of wine infused/flavored chocolates to be found. The anti-oxidant trend in chocolate is fueling some interest while delicious, full, unique flavor and taste are what drives customers. A very cool new green company is Theo Chocolates - the first roaster of Fair Trade Certified™ cocoa beans and the only roaster of organic cocoa beans in the United States. Theo approaches its coffee like a fine wine, with reverence for single origin beans, terroir and their unique attributes. (www.theochocolate.com)

The bottomline from Expo this year: Natural products can simultaneously be decadent and healthful. If you love organic wine, cocktails, and chocolate, you have a lot of great anti-oxidants coming your way!

Our poor blog has been neglected for many months, mostly due to all the travel we are doing to kick off Square One across the country. This of course made us realize that it was high time that we did something to offset all those carbon emissions. We consider ourselves among the mainstream consumers who are still learning about how to make green decisions that can help the planet. Buying carbon offsets for our business travel is very easy, and we can thank a lot of the recent green issues in national magazines that helped do the homework for us on which organizations are leaders in the carbon offsetting business. So as of this month, April, Earth Month, every month we will sum up our team's collective business travel, and buy carbon offsets. We try to do much by phone and email, but when we have to travel, we want to be conscious of our impact! Check out these companies that offer carbon offset calculators and sell online:
After pushing our label company to find us a more sustainable main face
label for our Square One Organic Vodka, we are proud to say that yesterday
we officially converted from a virgin tree paper stock to a tree-free paper
made from bamboo pulp, bagasse (sugar cane fiber) and cotton lintners.
The paper is certified in several ways, and is produced by Fasson
<a href="http://na.fasson.com/frna/frnasite.nsf/a6cdb71a011a30358825693100816894/3a749a8d8b1240fb882

We also switched to a foot label that has more recycled paper content in it and
hope to someday find a glossy paper that is 100% recycled or tree free!

And don't forget to help save energy by re-using your Square One bottle again
instead of recycling it. Simply soak the finished bottle in very hot water (about 120 degrees)
for 15 minutes and scrape off the labels. It is great as an olive oil bottle, a vase or for your mixer concoctions for your next cocktail party!

Who wouldn't jump at the chance to dine at Marin County's divine Lark Creek Inn, especially when we are supporting the Organic Farming Research Foundation? This year marked the 14th year the OFRF has hosted a harvest benefit to raise funds to sustain their grant activities for organic farming research. In attendance were such Northern California organic pioneers and luminaries as Paul Dolan - the father of organic viticulture, Nell Newman - Founder of Newman's Own Organics, executives and family owners of a number of organic product companies such as Strauss Family Creamery, Bonterra Vineyards, Diestel Family Trukey Ranch, McEvoy Ranch Olive Oil and numerous others. As one of the newer companies in the organic food and beverage space, it was really great to meet so many of the people who started this movement so many years ago. And it too was inspiring to have them root us on here at Square One, commending us for taking organic into the world of spirits and cocktails. Believe it or not, we health nuts also enjoy our social beverages as evidenced by the din of the dining room last night at Lark Creek Inn! Cheers to the Organic Farming Research Foundation for helping companies and farmers to advance the cause of organics through their grant program.
Recent news reports, including multiple stories in the Dallas Morning News, have highlighted the fact that the USDA national organic regulations (http://www.ams.usda.gov/nop/indexIE.htm ) are under attack due to lack of enforcement. Because national organic standards are relatively new – finalized and adopted in 2002 – there are no penalties currently in place for violations. This begs the question of organic certification and standards: why they are important and why should we care?

For years, manufacturers were using words on packaging that had no true grounding or basis, and “organic” was one of them. Like the word “natural,” it sounded good but no one knew exactly what it meant once everyone started to use it. Farmers seemed to have been the first group to regulate the use of the term organic, because in agriculture, organic really means something - a healthier, sustainable lifestyle from field to table. Legitimate organic producers did not want their quality and work diluted by the misuse of the term.

For decades, farmers led the movement to make organic standards more unified and enforceable, for the credibility of the industry. The advent of such food safety debates such as GMOs and Mad Cow hastened the push from organic consumers, which was necessary to bringing the need for organic certification and labeling to the forefront.

What was a successful public outcry in Europe and other parts of the world in the ‘80’s and ‘90s, finally took hold in the US in the ‘90s and ‘00s catalyzed by the demand of consumers who wanted to know what was in the products they use. Everyone deserves to know what’s in the food that they eat and drink.

Let’s face it, many consumers also want to feel good about the companies they support and need a means of ascertaining if they are truly organic and following the rules. Third-party certification does this for us at the national level under the USDA, and at the local level through tried and true organizations such as Oregon Tilth. Reputable producers can take it even further by establishing even higher production standards for their organic products. We should all work to enforce and support these standards if we care about maintaining the quality option that organics offer us.

We'll soon start traveling on Square One biz and will share some more "Take a Bite" stories from other cities across the U.S. In the meantime, we've been exploring some of our local 'hoods, finding new bar and dining gems to share with our friends. Over the past year we've noted the slow transformation of the Tenderloin district in San Francisco into a new destination for swanky lounges and dining destinations. On a recent night out on the town, we visited Brick, a small-plates style restaurant that opened a few months ago. Full disclosure - they carry Square One - but even if they didn't, we'd still rave about the food. Seared scallops on a bed of corn relish, fresh from the Farmer's Market heirloom tomatoes, herbed garlic fries to die for and more. With a big U-shaped bar, we're hoping they'll turn next to creating some signature cocktails to mirror their delicious food. The night was young after Brick, so we headed a few streets down to the edge of the Tenderloin, and hit one of our cocktail faves - Rye. Yep, they carry Square One there too, but that's not the point. Co-owner Jon Gasparini made some off the cuff new cocktails right on the spot - using fresh ingredients like tangerine juice, honeydew melon, mint and the like. They showcase a fantastic selection of rye whiskies that many cocktail mavens today would shy away from . . . that is until you try one of Jon's or Greg's specialty cocktails with them as the star ingredient. So while of course we enjoyed a Square One concoction that night, we also sipped away at one of Jon's new rye whiskey specialties to cap off a nice summer night on the town. Delish . . .
